Tsunoda makes intentions crystal clear over his F1 future in 2027

The Japanese driver, who was left without a full-time seat this year following a difficult campaign with Red Bull last season, has served as a reserve since the start of 2026.

However, Tsunoda has already returned to Grand Prix action twice, stepping in for the injured Isack Hadjar at Zandvoort and Monza, and will get a third opportunity with Racing Bulls in Madrid this weekend.

Tsunoda came close to scoring on his first appearance of the season at Zandvoort, qualifying 12th for the Grand Prix before gaining one position to finish 11th, just outside the points. He also started the Sprint from 12th and crossed the line 13th. At Monza, the Japanese driver endured a more difficult qualifying session, setting the 17th-fastest time before penalties promoted him to 15th on the grid. He then made significant progress in the race to finish 10th, securing his first point of the season.

Speaking to media in Madrid, Tsunoda was asked by GPblog whether any teams have already approached him over a potential seat for 2027. The Japanese driver preferred to leave those discussions in the hands of his management, instead focusing on delivering strong performances whenever he gets the opportunity to race.

Tsunoda believes his recent results, including finishing in the points, can strengthen his case for a full-time return to the grid. Formula 1 remains his clear priority, while he also expressed his appreciation for Red Bull giving him another opportunity to race through one of its four seats.

When GPblog then asked whether he would be willing to spend another season as a reserve driver, Tsunoda made his preference clear. After returning to competitive action for these three Grands Prix, the Japanese driver wants to race regularly again rather than remain on the sidelines in 2027: "I don't want to. I want to race, especially after these three races. I know, like, I want to race with the cars."
