Alonso adds touch of trademark humour as he addresses 2027 F1 future

The two-time world champion is yet to make a final decision on whether he will remain on the Formula 1 grid next season, with his advancing age seemingly proving no obstacle, as his results this year continue to demonstrate.

Asked during the press conference ahead of his second home Grand Prix weekend when an announcement on his plans for 2027 could be expected, Alonso remained coy: "Not soon."

Asked why he was in no rush to make a decision, the Spaniard jokingly replied:"Because I think it's nice."

Alonso faced another question about his Formula 1 future and once again responded with a touch of irony. Asked whether Aston Martin was showing any urgency to secure his signature for 2027, particularly after other high-profile drivers potentially available to the team committed their futures elsewhere, the Spaniard joked about those possible alternatives visiting team owner Lawrence Stroll during the summer: "Those drivers, they were visiting Lawrence in summer, yes. So, yeah, no urgency."

Finally, Alonso suggested that his future will not simply come down to whether he still wants to race in F1. The Spaniard first wants to see how the 2027 regulations influence both the quality of the racing and the feeling of driving the cars, having repeatedly expressed his dissatisfaction with the current generation. He is nevertheless optimistic that next year's changes could improve the situation.

His discussions with Aston Martin will then focus on where he can be most useful to the team. Continuing behind the wheel remains an option, but Alonso also left the door open to stepping away from racing and contributing in a different capacity, with both sides set to decide together which path would benefit the project most.
