Oscar Piastri raised eyebrows at the British Grand Prix, according to Sky Sports analyst Martin Brundle. The Australian was handed a ten-second penalty following an incident with Max Verstappen behind the safety car, but he felt the penalty was unfair. As a result, Piastri asked McLaren to instruct teammate Lando Norris to hand the lead back to him. Brundle highly critical of Piastri’s ‘brazen’ proposal
Piastri’s request was outright ignored, but the radio message in which he asked the team for a position swap led to stern words from Brundle in his column for Sky Sports.
“That was more than brazen,” writes the Brit about the moment Piastri made the remarkable proposal over the team radio.
According to Brundle, a different side of the normally calm and composed McLaren driver was visible at Silverstone: ''That's the first time we've seen the angry side of the calm silent Aussie assassin remarks,'' referring to Piastri’s unusually fiery tone after the race.
Despite the incident, Brundle is convinced that McLaren’s formidable form is set to lead them to the constructors' title:
“ Frankly they may as well hand the constructors' trophy over to McLaren and save time in what will be a very short winter in F1 land.''Brundle also emphasized how ''the McLaren duo'' were ''a full two seconds faster per lap than the rest of the field in some phases.''
Brundle found Piastri’s penalty justified
Brundle also commented on the Piastri incident behind the safety car. The analyst says there was clearly a violation and thus finds the ten-second penalty more than justified.
He also emphasizes that Piastri’s action was especially dangerous due to the poor visibility caused by rainy conditions at Silverstone.
