F1 director of motorsport Ross Brawn has drawn a comparison between Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and a skilfull centre-forward in football, in the wake of the Aussie's win in Shanghai.
Ricciardo spectacularly won the sixth race of his F1-career, as he started from sixth too. With him being on fresher tyres than everyone in front of him after the safety car was deployed, Ricciardo went to work.
He took fourth from Verstappen as the Dutchman tried to make a move on Hamilton and got pushed off the track. He then made a spectacular move on Lewis Hamilton as he approached the Brit on a straight, waited that little bit longer with braking as they approached a hairpin turn, and then forced his RB14 to the inside line and kept Hamilton behind him as they accelerated away. He overtook Vettel on a straight only a few laps after, and then finally lined up a move on Valtteri Bottas, who was in first. Bottas left the door a little bit open on a turn and Ricciardo kicked it in, squeezing his Red Bull through a very tight gap to take first place and never look back.
“Once again, Daniel demonstrated an uncanny ability to make the most of any opportunity that comes his way during a Grand Prix,” said Brawn.
"All six of his Formula 1 wins have come in races in which he has started fourth or lower.
“His perfect timing and overtaking skills really are impressive, Daniel is like a centre-forward with incredible ball control.
“When defenders come up against him they simply don't know what to expect."
