Antonelli concedes Norris deserved Spanish GP victory: "It doesn't feel as good"

Antonelli and Norris were entangled in a dramatic fight at the start of the all-new race, with the former going off the track on two occasions in the opening five corners, and subsequently giving back the lead to pole-sitter Norris.

From there, the McLaren driver impressively pulled away from the Italian and Red Bull's Max Verstappen, but after a Virtual Safety Car, brought out by Lance Stroll on Lap 14, the world champion's race was turned upside down.

Having missed the initial opportunity to pit, Norris suffered a slow stop on the following lap, just moments after the VSC had ended. The 27-year-old re-emerged in P5 behind George Russell, and with an awful lot of work to do. Ultimately, the Briton could not get past Verstappen in P2 - having been stuck behind the Dutchman for much of the race's closing stages.

McLaren's mishap allowed Antonelli to take the win, biding his time behind a yet-to-pit Charles Leclerc, and then impressively pulling away in clean air to a four-second winning margin.

Speaking after the race, Antonelli conceded Norris' slow stop was crucial for his victory. He said: "It was a very difficult race - not straightforward at all, especially trying to manage tyres.

Taking his eighth win of the season, Antonelli leads the standings by 81 points, with his Mercedes teammate George Russell finishing P5 in the Spanish capital, while Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton suffered a huge blow in the title race after a Lap 7 retirement.

The 20-year-old, however, is not concerned at all by the title fight, adding: "That's exactly what I don't want to do. I want to keep pushing race by race, keep delivering and keep enjoying it all the way and try to do my best every race and we will see where we end up at the end of the year."
