Antonelli’s W17 warning Mercedes cannot explain ahead of the Italian GP at Monza

Antonelli still finished second at Zandvoort, extending his lead at the top of the drivers’ championship. Yet the result concealed a troubling pattern in the closing stages: each new tyre set appeared to bring a less manageable W17, with the Italian reporting an increasingly difficult balance.

The 19-year-old had looked comfortable early on. He started third, moved ahead of team-mate George Russell on the opening lap and remained firmly in the fight through the first phase of the race. But his confidence in the car ebbed away as the grand prix developed.

Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin has since confirmed that the team has no immediate explanation. The concern is particularly significant because it was not caused by an obvious set-up intervention.

That is the critical point for Mercedes as the car was not simply a case of becoming harder to drive due to tyre wear, nor an expected consequence of a strategic choice. Antonelli’s worsening oversteer arrived without a clear mechanical or aerodynamic trigger, leaving the championship-leading team to investigate a potential blind spot in its understanding of the car.

The timing could scarcely be worse. Antonelli will start his home Italian Grand Prix with a major power-unit penalty after Mercedes elected to install a complete new set of components. Team principal Toto Wolff said the decision was based on championship logic rather than sentiment.

Mercedes will hope Monza’s long straights and overtaking potential allow Antonelli to minimise the damage. But with a recovery drive already required, the team cannot afford its W17 balance question to follow him into one of the season’s most consequential weekends.
