Monaco GP polesitter Kimi Antonelli outlined the approach he plans to take for Sunday's race, looking to capitalise on the stunning pole position he secured in qualifying while remaining fully aware of the unique challenges the Principality presents, where even the smallest mistake can prove costly.
Just when pole position appeared destined to fall into Max Verstappen's hands, the championship leader pulled off another stunning lap to snatch P1 by just a handful of thousandths, denying the four-time world champion at the very end of qualifying. The result puts Antonelli in a strong position heading into Sunday's race, with overtaking traditionally proving extremely difficult around the streets of Monaco.

Antonelli shares game plan to hold off Verstappen and Hamilton into Turn 1

Speaking after qualifying, the Italian acknowledged the challenge that awaits him despite starting from pole position. Antonelli stressed that the drivers behind him are all capable of applying significant pressure and explained that securing a strong launch off the line will be one of his main priorities. He also pointed out that, while Canada represented a step forward, Monaco presents a completely different challenge and much will depend on how the race unfolds.

"I know who is behind and I know they’re very good, so for sure they’re going to push me and they’re going to try to put pressure. First of all, I’ll try to get a good start. Canada was a step forward but tomorrow, of course, different conditions. And then we’ll see. You still need to have a good pace in hand because tyre degradation might be bigger than what we anticipate."

The championship leader also admitted that tyre degradation remains something of an unknown, with teams having gathered only limited long-run data throughout the weekend. While overtaking is notoriously difficult around the Principality, Antonelli emphasised that outright pace will still be crucial, particularly if changing circumstances or strategy calls force drivers to push harder than expected during the race.
"We didn’t really try any long runs. We did only a few laps, so we don’t really have as much data. But for sure we know that it’s very difficult to overtake, but you still need to have the pace because in case of something happening, you need to push."

Verstappen and Hamilton give Antonelli hilarious advice for Monaco start

Antonelli was first asked about his plans for the race start around the streets of Monte Carlo. Reflecting on his recent progress in this area, the Italian admitted that starts have not always been one of his strongest points, although he felt he had taken a step forward in Montreal compared to previous weekends. With the run down to Sainte Devote being relatively short, Antonelli explained that his focus will simply be on getting away cleanly and avoiding unnecessary risks in the opening metres of the race.

The discussion then turned to Verstappen and Hamilton, who were both asked whether they had any advice for the young Mercedes driver ahead of Sunday's Grand Prix. Rather than offering genuine guidance, the pair opted for humour, with Verstappen jokingly suggesting that Antonelli should wait a second after the lights go out before reacting, prompting Hamilton to join in by extending the delay even further with a smile.
