Fernando Alonso continues to push for more amid Aston Martin's difficulties at the beginning of the season. The Spaniard stressed that the team's next update package needs to be the first of many steps. Ahead of the British Grand Prix, Aston Martin confirmed that an update package featuring aero upgrades and weight reduction will be introduced at the Hungaroring, the final race before the
Formula 1 summer break.
"Obviously you need to attack a lot of parts to achieve that. If I would have to list all the parts, I think I would not even know all the parts that are changed. So I think we wait until we have it and then we will declare what you have to declare and we see where we're going to end with," Aston Martin's, Chief Trackside Officer, Mike Krack said.
Updates to the power unit by Honda will then follow for the
Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.
Alonso reveals what he expects from Hungary updates
Looking ahead, the two-time world champion said: "I think it is important to see that the direction that we took and all the time that we took as well since Bahrain, probably the team made the decision to wait for a proper package to be introduced whenever it was. We didn't know if it was race 7 or race 12 or at the end of the year, but we knew that okay, this is our starting place and position, this is not good enough. We are lacking downforce, power, gearbox, all these kind of things."
He continued: "So we need to study, we need to regroup, and we need to make a plan. I think for the fans, they want Aston Martin to win races and to fight for the championship. So I don't think that this year, whatever the upgrade is and whatever we can improve, will be never enough.
"We will always miss an extra package. So that has to be clear for the fans, that we are working day and night to improve the car. We will get better. Will we win races? Not this year.
Therefore, he wants Aston Martin to continue to push. "So this is only the first step into the plan. It cannot be the last one. So for me, it's important to feel in Hungary that we are understanding what are the weaknesses of the car and we are tackling them. Especially on the aero package, that is the first one that is coming, we are struggling with very specific things this year behind the wheel and if those are improved in Hungary and we can drive the car to maximum, then I think there is a very clear path and a good momentum that we can take for next year. So that's for me the most important thing," the Spaniard explained.
