Fernando Alonso will also race for Aston Martin in 2027. Although the two-time world champion and the British team have not confirmed it, GPblog hears from multiple sources that the partnership will ‘simply’ be extended.
Fernando Alonso was expected to use the summer break to decide whether his future still lies in Formula 1. Naturally, on the eve of the first race after the break, the Spaniard was asked what he had decided. The two-time world champion did not give a definitive answer in the Netherlands.
That does not mean no decision has been made. In the F1 paddock at the Zandvoort circuit, whispers grew louder that Alonso does indeed know what he wants to do next year: race in Formula 1 with Aston Martin. This website hears that an announcement in Madrid during the Spanish Grand Prix weekend is to be expected.
Although Alonso has indicated he takes little enjoyment from racing the current generation of F1 cars, his mood seemed much improved last Sunday when his updated Aston Martin managed to finish ninth (and thus in the points). No one should be surprised if his earlier criticism fades once Aston Martin can consistently compete in the midfield.

No way back for Alonso after farewell

Alonso undoubtedly realizes that a farewell to Formula 1 at the end of 2026 would be final. In that case, he would certainly never again be able to fight for a world title or take a Grand Prix victory. Moreover, it would be especially bitter if Adrian Newey and Honda were to prove the right combination in 2027. Throughout his long career, Alonso had a habit of leaving a team only for that team to improve dramatically afterward.
Within Aston Martin, there is confidence that Newey and Honda will ultimately succeed, even if it takes a bit longer than initially hoped. But who knows—might podium finishes be possible for Alonso in 2027?
