Total chaos as Marquez abandons MotoGP grid just minutes before race start

The 2026 MotoGP season heads to Austin, Texas this weekend at the much-loved Circuit of the Americas. Marc Marquez, a seven-time winner at the track, caused quite the drama last year when he decided to abandon the grid and switch bikes despite starting from pole position.
The 2025 race took place in mixed conditions, and the chaos of the weekend was certainly foreshadowed by the safety car crashing before the formation lap had even taken place.
Just as the United States national anthem rung out around the circuit, Marquez devised an ingenious plan to switch to his dry tyres, knowing that the majority of the field around him were going to similarly start on wets.
With just minutes to go before the start of the race, Marc darted back to his pit-box to jump on the second bike, an action which sparked all-out chaos as other riders decided whether or not to follow-suit.

In the end, the strategic gamble was made redundant by a rule which states that if a certain number of riders abandon the grid prior to the race, it must be officially restarted.
This enabled Marquez to remain on pole position but with his newly desired tyres - an outcome which severely irritated the likes of Joan Mir who had already made the smart call of starting on dries.
Ironically, after all the confusion and indecision, Marquez crashed out of the lead of the race (on his dry tyres) after hitting a wet kerb and sliding across the track, handing a gift of a victory to his factory teammate Francesco Bagnaia.
While Ducati will be hoping to achieve victory here again this weekend, they would certainly prefer it if both their main riders can bring it home in one piece.
