Jorge Martin has described his emotions after being the only non-Italian on the podium in Mugello and has stated that he felt 'envious' watching teammate Bezzecchi recieve such a warm reception from his home crowd. Mugello is widely considered one of the prestigious circuits in MotoGP and is a track every rider wants to win at - particularly for those from Italian, and even moreso while racing for an Italian team.
The historic race saw
Marco Bezzecchi battle with fellow Italian
Francesco Bagnaia and claim a stunning victory to reassert himself as the leader of the MotoGP championship. After a streak of three races without a win, Bezzecchi was overcome with emotion upon crossing the finish line and was seen in tears on the podium as he looked out over a sea of adoring fans.
Bagnaia, who is also a home favourite, battled heroically and earned one of the biggest cheers of the day with his last-corner cut back on Trackhouse's Ai Ogura. The two-time MotoGP champion claimed a memorable podium on
Ducati's 100-year anniversary and denied
Aprilia from a total lock-out.
Jorge Martin 'envious' of Bezzecchi's home win
Jorge Martin, Bezzecchi's teammate at Aprilia, was rather the forgotten figure of the afternoon as he took a comfortable second place, just as he did
in the sprint on Saturday. The 2024 champion will be quietly confident with his string of consistent results, as it was the consistent podium finishes which ultimately won him the title before.

Speaking after the race, Martin gave his view on how it felt to stand on the podium as the sole Spaniard alongside two beloved Italians:
"I'm happy for Aprilia, and really happy for Marco [Bezzecchi]. Wow, the most impressive podium, I didn't even want to leave, because obviously they weren't exactly shouting that much for me. But just seeing it, the emotion of the moment was incredible, I really enjoyed it. Even hearing the anthem was beautiful."
"I felt envious of Bez, because for him winning at Mugello is something I don’t think can be matched. I hope to experience it myself at some Spanish race."
As for his chances in the
championship battle with his Italian teammate, Jorge Martin credits the Italian with pushing him harder than he has ever had to work before:
"I would have loved to be first today and put another rider in between. Anything I can gain on Marco will always be positive. But I think that at Mugello, on one of their best tracks, with all their fans, finishing second is a very good result. I have to keep going like this. Surely, thanks to Marco, I'm pushing my limits to another level, because I'm working three times as hard to beat him. I've never had a teammate who has pushed me like Marco. At least, not during my time in MotoGP."
Heading into the
Hungarian Grand Prix at Balaton Park this weekend, the two Aprilia riders are separated by 17 points at the front, with VR46's Fabio Di Giannantonio trailing in third place, 22 points behind.
