It was not a factory rider who delivered Aprilia's Mugello victory on Saturday, as Raul Fernandez won the Sprint at the Italian Grand Prix for the Trackhouse team. The Spaniard was joined on the podium by Jorge Martin and Fabio Di Giannantonio.
Running an alternative tyre strategy with a medium rear tyre, the two Spanish Aprilia riders Fernandez and Martin broke away from the field in the opening laps and controlled the race in first and second. Despite starting from pole, Marco Bezzecchi had to settle for fourth. As a result, Martin has reduced the gap in the standings by three points and now sits 12 points behind his Italian teammate.
Di Giannantonio and Marquez bring consistency for Ducati
It was impossible to battle the Aprilias today for the victory, but Fabio Di Giannantonio and Marc Marquez once again showed strong pace for Ducati. The Spaniard got off to a superb start and led the race into Turn 1, but within a couple of corners he dropped down to fifth place. After being overtaken by Bezzecchi but passing Honda talent Diogo Moreira, the Ducati rider finished fifth in his first Sprint since returning from injury.
Francesco Bagnaia came home seventh behind Fermin Aldeguer, while Ai Ogura and Pedro Acosta rounded out the points-paying positions in Italy today.
