A race weekend in the United States that built up like a Hitchcock movie ended with a real thriller in the final laps at the Circuit of Americas. While Max Verstappen won with the slimmest of margins, Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton lost a race they couldn’t really afford to lose in the 2021 F1 World Championship. This is why.
Red Bull Racing opted with a strategy that favoured track position rather than fresh tyres at the end of the race. Hamilton got within DRS zone but couldn't get close enough to challenge for an overtake in the final few laps.
