Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has shared his thoughts on the team’s prospects ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend.
The Austrian motorsport chief highlighted the prestige of the Monaco weekend and the rich history surrounding the event, while stressing that Mercedes must build their performance across every session in order to extract maximum results.
Wolff also underlined the unique demands of qualifying at the tight and twisty street circuit, noting that success in Monaco is heavily dependent on Saturday’s performance. He added that the Brackley-based outfit are approaching the weekend without assumptions or performance guarantees, given how fine the margins are around the Principality.
“Monaco remains one of the most prestigious races on the calendar. There is so much history and ceremony around the event, but none of that changes our task. We need to build through practice and be in a position to deliver when it matters,” Wolff said via the Mercedes press release.

“Qualifying in Monaco is always thrilling. With this new generation of smaller, more nimble cars, the challenge should be even more pronounced. To be in with a chance of victory on Sunday, you need to have a good Saturday. It will be an impressive spectacle and one we are looking forward to,” the Austrian added.
“We head into the weekend without any assumptions, though. Monaco is a circuit different to any other on the calendar. A car that has been competitive elsewhere is not guaranteed to be strong here. The margins are small, the consequences are high, and previous performance does not always translate. We will need to be at our best throughout if we are to continue our recent form,” Wolff concluded.

So far, Mercedes have enjoyed a near-flawless start to the 2026 campaign. The Brackley-based team have claimed victory in all five races held so far and sit firmly in control of both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.
However, Monaco has traditionally been a far more difficult venue for the team. Their only victory in the last five editions of the race came in 2019, when Lewis Hamilton crossed the line first ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas. At the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix, with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli behind the wheel, Mercedes endured a difficult weekend, finishing 11th and 18th, respectively.

Pirelli unveils tyre compounds for Monaco GP

For Formula 1’s most famous street race, Pirelli has selected the softest compounds in its 2026 tyre range: the C3, C4, and C5. The Italian manufacturer explained that the selection was made to maximise grip on Monaco’s exceptionally smooth asphalt surface.
Several sections of the circuit have been resurfaced since last year’s race, including the stretch between Turns 1 and 9, the section from Turn 7 to the tunnel entrance, and both the pit lane entry and exit. While this may slightly increase the likelihood of tyre graining, Pirelli does not expect it to have a major impact on overall performance, as Monaco places relatively low demands on tyres beyond traction.
Low degradation has traditionally made Monaco a one-stop race. The main exception came last year when the FIA introduced an experimental rule requiring drivers to use at least three sets of tyres during the race, effectively mandating two pit stops. That regulation has since been scrapped, with standard tyre rules returning for this year’s edition of the Monaco Grand Prix.
