Max Verstappen heads to Monaco looking to build on the momentum gained over the past few races, having secured his first podium finish of the season in Montreal after coming out on top in a thrilling wheel-to-wheel battle with Lewis Hamilton.
The four-time world champion endured a difficult start to the season, but the progress shown in recent races suggests the RB22 has responded well to the team's development programme. As a result, Verstappen has been able to re-establish himself at the sharp end of the field and return to fighting among the frontrunners, although a race victory has so far remained out of reach, with the two Mercedes drivers continuing to dominate the top step of the podium.

Verstappen identifies crucial Monaco factor

Speaking ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, Verstappen said the progress made in Miami had brought the team much closer to the level of performance it has been targeting. The Dutchman explained that he felt more at ease behind the wheel and was able to extract more from the RB22, while stressing that Red Bull remains focused on finding further improvements and continuing its development push.

"We made some positive steps forward in Miami and the pace is a lot closer to where we need to be. I felt like we were able to extract a better performance from the car and I felt more comfortable. However, we will keep pushing as there are always things we can improve and work on, which is how we operate as a Team."

Looking ahead to Monaco, Verstappen highlighted the importance of strategy and qualifying around the streets of the Principality, where track position is often crucial. He also admitted it had been beneficial to enjoy a short break before the upcoming double-header, allowing him to recharge and spend time with his family ahead of one of the busiest weekends on the Formula 1 calendar.
"Monaco is always reliant on good strategy and, as always here, it will be key to get the best result in Qualifying. It has been nice to have a bit of time to reset before the double header and good to be close to home and be able to see family especially when it is a hectic weekend on and off track."

Verstappen comeback predicted: 'You can never take out of the equation'

Speaking exclusively to GPblog, Pedro De la Rosa believes Formula 1's competitive order will continue to fluctuate from circuit to circuit throughout the season. The former driver expects Ferrari to be a genuine contender at certain venues, while Red Bull could regain the upper hand elsewhere depending on the characteristics of the track.
The Spaniard also warned against ever ruling Verstappen out of the equation. In his view, the Dutchman remains a constant threat regardless of whether he has the strongest package underneath him, with changing conditions and his exceptional ability always giving him a chance to make the difference. De la Rosa added that this variety at the front is exactly what fans want to see, with multiple teams battling for victories rather than the fight being confined to a single outfit.

"Even if his car is not good enough, today could be wet, you know, the race, and then we're talking about how great Max Verstappen and Red Bull are. So, you know, I have a huge amount of respect for Max. Everyone has. And he's definitely someone that you can never take out of the equation until the flag drops."
