Mercedes team principal and CEO Toto Wolff has admitted the extensive upgrade package introduced on the W17 in Canada did not fully deliver the gains the team had hoped for, although he stressed it remains too early to draw definitive conclusions about its overall effectiveness.
The update package brought to Canada covered several key areas of the W17. At the front of the car, the team introduced a redesigned front wing assembly and revised endplates intended to better manage airflow. Adjustments were also made around the front corner region.
Further changes were concentrated around the floor, traditionally one of the most critical performance areas under the current regulations. Mercedes revised several floor components, including the floor edge and corner sections, while also reshaping parts of the diffuser in an effort to increase downforce generation and improve overall airflow quality beneath the car. The package was completed by updates at the rear of the W17, where Mercedes altered the arrangement of aerodynamic elements around the rear corner in a bid to further optimise airflow towards the back of the car.

Mercedes adopts wait-and-see approach after W17 upgrades

Speaking to GPblog and other media outlets after the race, Wolff acknowledged that the upgrade package introduced in Canada had fallen short of Mercedes' expectations. While the team enjoyed a highly competitive weekend, the Austrian stressed that it remains difficult to determine exactly how much of that performance was down to the new parts and how much was linked to the characteristics of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

"It didn't bring the performance gains that we had expected on paper, but it's very difficult to assess. We didn't see the McLarens today at all. We had the pace, we had the gap, but how much that is, is it what we have anticipated, I think it's very difficult to judge yet."
He also pointed out that Mercedes had already been strong in Montreal last year, making it difficult to establish whether the latest upgrades had genuinely moved the team forward or whether the circuit simply played to the strengths of the W17. He also suggested that Monaco may not provide a clear answer either, with the team instead planning to continue gathering data over the coming races before reaching any firm conclusions about the effectiveness of the package.
"Montreal was a sweet circuit for us last year. Is that shining a better light on our performance than it would be on any other circuit? Probably Monaco, we won't know it either, so we need to continue to monitor and to analyze."

Steiner hails 'rockstar' Wolff after Mercedes drivers' Canada battle

Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner has praised Wolff's handling of the tense battle between Kimi Antonelli and George Russell during the Canadian Grand Prix, arguing that the Mercedes boss played a key role in allowing one of the weekend's most compelling stories to unfold.
Steiner was particularly impressed by the fact that Mercedes refrained from issuing team orders despite having both drivers fighting closely on track. In his view, many teams would have been tempted to intervene in order to avoid unnecessary risks, especially with valuable championship points at stake.

Instead, Wolff allowed his drivers to race freely, a decision Steiner believes added significantly to the spectacle and demonstrated confidence in both Antonelli and Russell. The Italian also highlighted the pressure that comes with overseeing an intra-team battle at the front of the field, arguing that the Mercedes chief deserved credit for resisting the urge to step in and control the situation.
