Max Verstappen actually preferred a different racing number to 3 or 33, one which his father Jos Verstappen steered him away from. “I actually wanted no.69 but my dad said 'that’s not a good idea.'”
- Max VerstappenPreviously he indicated that his favourite number is three. But, when he made his
F1 debut in 2015
Daniel Ricciardo was already racing with that number, so Verstappen chose 33.
However, it turns out he actually preferred a very different racing number, something his father Jos strongly advised against.
Verstappen wanted to race with number 69 in F1
In the run-up to the
Las Vegas Grand Prix, Verstappen was asked whether number 3 would really be his first choice. The Dutchman replied with a wink that he had actually wanted a different number.
“I actually wanted no.69 but my dad said 'that’s not a good idea,'” he said according to Autosport.
Verstappen also added that the number has its advantages.
"That number always looks the same, no matter how you look at the car.
"No. 69 would be very good for the photos and marketing, and for the caps as well. It doesn't matter how you wear them, it always stays No. 69. In that respect it would be a good marketing tool."

There was another number Verstappen liked - number 27. But that was also taken by
Nico Hulkenberg. The reigning world champion explained that he likes how the numbers 2 and 7 look together in terms of shape. He emphasised that number 3 is his favourite number, but that there are several numbers he finds appealing.
Whether or not Verstappen will be able to race with Daniel Ricciardo's number 3 in 2026 is not completely down to him.
Rules state that a driver loses their claim to a number when they have spend two years out of the sport. In Ricciardo's case he has been out of the sport for only 18 months. However, the FIA and F1 are understood to be discussing the possibility of changing this rule.
