Lando Norris retained the lead at the start with an excellent getaway, while George Russell lost a position to his teammate after a less-than-ideal launch. Max Verstappen then crashed into the wall on the main straight, bringing out the red flag. Here is everything that happened on the opening lap of the Dutch Grand Prix. The Dutchman also had a close call with Lewis Hamilton at the start, running two wheels onto the gravel but managing to avoid contact, before going wheel-to-wheel with Liam Lawson at Turn 3. The major incident then came on the exit of the final corner, where Verstappen crashed heavily into the barriers.
Gabriel Bortoleto also spun at the same spot as Verstappen, but produced a brilliant save to avoid hitting the barriers and managed to rejoin the track facing the right direction. A major collision with his teammate was also narrowly avoided, with Nico Hulkenberg reacting brilliantly to dodge Bortoleto.
The race was neutralised due to the large amount of debris scattered across the track, with the field now waiting for the action to resume.
