McLaren team principal Andrea Stella was asked what he would do if he were in Laurent Mekies' position at Red Bull, facing the prospect of losing his lead driver after a disappointing first half of the season.
For days, speculation has continued to intensify over Max Verstappen's potential departure at the end of the season, with a move to McLaren emerging as a possible destination. Such a switch would see the Dutchman form a blockbuster driver pairing alongside reigning world champion Lando Norris, despite the Woking-based team not enjoying the strongest start to the 2026 season.
Speaking to GPBlog among others at Silverstone, Stella stressed that his full focus remains on improving McLaren, pointing out that the team still has significant performance to unlock while also addressing reliability issues affecting both the power unit and chassis. Rather than commenting on how Mekies should handle Red Bull's situation, he said McLaren has more than enough areas to improve within its own operation.
“I have enough to do at McLaren to gain half a second in the shortest amount of time. We don't have to forget that we haven't had a good start of the season from our reliability point of view either. And this goes in the power unit area, but it also goes in the chassis area.

Stella also praised Mekies, describing him as highly capable and expressing confidence that he will make the right decisions at Red Bull. He added that he hopes both McLaren and Red Bull can close the gap to Mercedes and Ferrari, making the second half of the Formula 1 season even more competitive.
“As Andrea Stella, there's enough to do at McLaren, not to think about what Laurent should do. Laurent is very capable, he's very intelligent, very competent. So I'm sure he will do everything that is necessary and McLaren and Red Bull hopefully will be able to join Mercedes and Ferrari and we can have an even more exciting Formula 1 in the second part of the season.”

Brown reveals why McLaren are missing key Mercedes engine upgrade

Speaking to the media at Silverstone, Zak Brown admitted McLaren would naturally prefer to already have Mercedes' latest power unit specification available, but stressed the team is not frustrated by the delay. Instead, he explained that the upgrade will arrive in due course and that the focus remains on continuing to maximise performance with the current package until then.

The McLaren CEO also clarified that the team cannot simply install the new specification whenever it chooses, as the existing engines still have mileage remaining before reaching the planned replacement point. He pointed out that other Mercedes-powered teams introduced the updated engine earlier because their circumstances required an engine change sooner, whereas McLaren must follow its own planned rotation before fitting the latest specification.
“Of course we’d like to have it. Any time you have performance that you know is coming but you don’t have it on your car yet, you want to get it as quickly as possible. But I wouldn’t say it’s a frustration. It just is what it is and we just keep our head down and keep pushing hard and it’ll be in the back in not too long.”
“You’ve got to cycle through your engines and we’ve got life left on our current engines, so we need to wait till we do an engine change. Williams got theirs because Carlos [Sainz] had his issues. He needed an engine change. I don’t recall exactly the scenario but I think you’ve got two of them [Alpine]. So, it’s just a timing sequence.”
