The relationship between Max Verstappen and Mark Mateschitz appears to have cooled considerably. It is claimed that the son of the late Dietrich Mateschitz is no longer willing to keep Verstappen at all costs. Over a decade ago, Helmut Marko approached Dietrich Mateschitz, the ultra-wealthy co-owner of Red Bull GmbH, with a seemingly remarkable proposal. The advisor wanted Verstappen, who was only sixteen years old at the time, to make his
Formula 1 debut. It was a daring move that raised quite a few eyebrows in the
F1 paddock.
Mateschitz gave Marko his blessing and saw Verstappen develop into the top driver he is today at
Red Bull Racing. After a lengthy illness, the businessman passed away in 2022, but saw the Dutchman's first title.
Is the bond between Verstappen and the Mateschitz family less strong?
Verstappen and Dietrich Mateschitz had a special relationship. Shortly before the Red Bull owner’s passing, for example, Verstappen paid him a visit. Back then, the bond between Verstappen and the entire Red Bull family was rock solid, but that is no longer the case.
In fact, it is said that Mark Mateschitz, Dietrich's son, is becoming increasingly annoyed that Verstappen has been refusing to provide clarity about his future with Red Bull Racing for some time now.
The Red Bull heir is even said to have offered the Dutchman a substantial sum to buy out his exit clause,
which is reportedly worth €8 million (£6.83 million). That would tie Verstappen down until 2028.
Reportedly, Mateschitz is particularly annoyed by Verstappen's rejection of the offer, partly because he believes the driver is not grateful enough for the team paying him a hefty salary and helping him win four titles over the years. As a result, Mateschitz supposedly wouldn’t want to keep Verstappen at all costs.
