Marc Marquez has sent a terrifying warning to his MotoGP title rivals ahead of the German Grand Prix. The nine-time World Champion has been on a miraculous recovery path during recent months, winning back-to-back Grands Prix in Hungary and Czechia.
Cutting the title gap to 40 points, he did it all after a
gruesome double surgery that prompted retirement fears earlier in the campaign.
Since then, he admitted he is back in the title fight when many had unwisely written the master of comebacks off.
Yet through it all, the
Ducati rider didn’t declare himself the favourite for any race, until now.
Marc Marquez expects to fight at the front at Sachsenring
Returning to the Sachsenring, where he’s won a ridiculous record 12 times, Marquez has explained why he’ll be leading the charge for
Ducati in a press release from the team:
"In Assen, we knew from the start that we would have to grit our teeth and suffer, but we still managed to manage the situation and score important points for the Championship.
“Here at Sachsenring, the scenario is different: physically I will undoubtedly struggle, but the layout of this circuit requires less energy expenditure. We can be among the fastest from the beginning.”
Marquez's two-race winning run came to an end last time out in the Netherlands where he finished seventh in the Grand Prix and sixth in the sprint.
However, the Assen track has never been a favourite for the Spaniard, and he told GPBlog about his hopes for Sachsenring straight after:
"I feel like I'm not the strongest one and I'm not the fastest one, but [it's like] nobody wants to be the fastest one. So at the moment, it's five names in the championship that are fighting every race there."
As for his chances in the Sachsenring compared to Assen, Marquez gave this assessment:
"Let's see [about the Sachsenring], we will understand what we can do there, and of course I expect to feel better there than here [Assen]."
Pecco Bagnaia admits German GP concerns
Teammate Pecco Bagnaia wasn’t so confident, however. The Italian is eighth in the riders’ standings on 130 points, 23 fewer than Marquez and 63 fewer than leader Jorge Martin:
"The weekend in Assen was complicated, and it hurt a lot to finish Sunday with a retirement, especially because of the work done with the team. Sachsenring hasn't historically been one of my favourite circuits, but we're facing this weekend with maximum determination.
"It will be very important to achieve a good result to close this first part of the season in the best possible way before the summer break.”
A Marquez in a full-body cast would still put in a fight in Germany, given his nickname as ‘King of the Ring’.
But former rider Ricard Jove has also given Ducati a warning of their own against title rivals Aprilia.
Former rider warns Ducati not to overlook Aprilia
Speaking on the DuraLaVita podcast, he said:
"It was predicted that Ducati would dominate, but it hasn't. Not only is Marc coming back from his injury, but Pecco is too, and he's already been ahead [of Marquez] for two Grand Prix races or so.
"[Aprilia] have shown they still have the speed, and their bikes have proven themselves; all four Aprilias were at the front all day.
"We have to enjoy it because you don't see this much variety of engines, teams, and dominance from here in MotoGP anymore.”
