It was a Monaco Grand Prix to forget for the Mercedes team. After a disappointing qualifying session, thanks to the other teams, they did not score a single point. Here is what happened to George Russell, and why the Briton was penalised.
After a disastrous Saturday, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli started the race from P14 and P15 respectively.
Entering the second half of the Monaco Grand Prix, after Alexander Albon completed his two stops, he swapped positions with Carlos Sainz, who previously held up Russell and the rest of the grid. That happened so the Spaniard can also complete his two stops and finish inside the Top 10.
Russell, now stuck behind Albon after he was stuck behind Sainz, decided to do something else, and cut the Nouvelle Chicane to overtake Albon.
Russell did not give back the position, citing that he will take the penalty and that Albon drove erratically. However, the Briton received a drive through penalty by the stewards, that completely led to him not having a shot at all at earning points this afternoon.,

Why Russell did not get the five-second penalty he possibly expected

"Anticipating that situations such as this might happen at this Monaco Grand Prix, all the teams were informed before the race by the Race Director (at the Stewards request) that the stewards would look carefully at a deliberate leaving of the track at Turn 10 to overtake a car or a train of slow cars. That communication also made it clear that the guideline penalty of 10 seconds may be insufficient for this deliberate infringement and that the penalty applied may be a greater penalty than 10 seconds," the stewards' report reads.
