Andrea Stella still believes Mercedes is the team to beat in Formula 1 at the moment. The McLaren team boss highlighted several areas where the German team performed better in Miami. McLaren had a strong weekend at the
Miami Grand Prix after the Woking-based team introduced a major upgrade package with seven changes. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri secured a one-two finish in the Sprint and also finished second and third on Sunday.
'Mercedes is still ahead'
Still,
Stella highlighted that Mercedes is still after the German team's domination during the first three rounds of the season. Speaking to
GPblog, among others, he shared:
"I think there's a few indicators of a different nature, but all kind of quantitative that tell that Mercedes is a faster car. "I think qualifying, we saw that Mercedes didn’t have any problem with deployment like they had in the sprint qualifying and in average if we see the behavior of the car in the corners they are faster than us.
"The corners in which they are mainly faster than us are the high-speed corners, they gained quite a bit on McLaren. And then in the race, if we look at the end of the first stint and then the end of the last stint, Antonelli in the first closes the gap and in the last opens the gap."
According to the team boss, McLaren could make up for that gap with their execution. "So I think all these factors indicate that Mercedes is a faster car. When we were slower, our execution was perfect, like in the sprint qualifying, and their execution was a few tenths of their potential," he concluded.
