Max Verstappen's race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, was the latest of the high-profile names announced to leave Red Bull Racing. The team's Head of Racing will join McLaren by 2028 at the latest. Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies explained that the team aims to promote talent from within. Recently, several key figures have left Red Bull Racing for different reasons. Christian Horner was replaced by Mekies, Helmut Marko departed after the 2026 season, while Adrian Newey, Rob Marshall and Jonathan Wheatley moved on to different teams. Lambiase will be the next to leave, taking on a new role at McLaren.
Mekies explains Red Bull's approach to finding replacement
Red Bull focuses on promoting talent within its own team, but does not shy away from bringing in people from other teams either. "We feel we have the best talent already, department by department, and that starts with Ben [Hodgkinson] on the power unit side for his team, and with Pierre [Wache] on the chassis side and his team. And under them, we feel we have the best talent," Mekies explained to GPblog among others.
He added: "When we can, we will always try to see how we can promote [employees] internally. We have created a number of talents over the last few years and we are proud of that. We want to continue. If and when we need to go and get a specific set of skills or experience from some of our dear competitors around the pit lane, we will do it.
"As we have done, you have seen last couple of weeks, we had a very good mix in our new structure, a very good mix of internal promotion with with Ben Waterhouse, and with Andrea Landi joining soon from Ferrari and Racing Bulls, and that's how we look at things. We go and give the best chance to our talents, and if we need to go elsewhere to inject, we will do it happily."
