Kimi Antonelli has shared his thoughts on whether he can fight with Mercedes teammate George Russell for the 2026 title, after he scored his first ever Grand Prix win in China. Antonelli is just four points off Russell after the opening two rounds (47-51), and a mature management of his lead, a Turn 14 lock up aside, may have many thinking he can battle his teammate for the title.
Meanwhile,
Toto Wolff has told Sky Sports that Antonelli's victory has arrived earlier than expected, saying:
"He's probably a little bit better than the trajectory I thought."'We are just at the beginning,' Antonelli says
In the post-race interviews with F1 TV, Antonelli was overwhelmed with emotion after his maiden win, but maintained it'll still take a lot to beat his more seasoned teammate Russell.
Antonelli said: "We are just at the beginning, we keep pushing.
"George is an incredible driver, very strong on all aspects, so it's going to take a lot to beat him.
"But it's a great opportunity to be working with him as well because I have been learning a lot from him.
"Looking forward to the rest of the season now. I always focus race by race so we'll see where we end up at the end of the year."
Meanwhile, Toto Wolff was also visibly emotional talking to Sky, reflecting on seeing Mercedes' past, present and future on the top step with race engineer Peter 'Bono' Bonnington.
"That was one of the best moments for me, the three of them with Bono right in the middle who was with Lewis [Hamilton] forever and then taking over with Kimi and making Kimi what he is today.
"It is rare I am overwhelmed but I am at the moment."
Lewis Hamilton 'honoured' to share first Ferrari podium with Antonelli
Lewis Hamilton's first Ferrari podium comes after 26 races with the Scuderia, a record for the longest streak without a top three Grand Prix finish.
The seven-time world champion
was delighted to share the moment with former team Mercedes, stepping on the steps with first-ever race winner Antonelli, Russell, and his former race engineer 'Bono'.
