Carlos Sainz is also set to start the Belgian Grand Prix with a grid penalty. As a result, the Spaniard will start from P19. The
Williams driver joins the long list of drivers serving grid penalties at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. After identifying an issue earlier today, Williams had to replace the Energy Store Main Enclosure (ESME) on his car, resulting in a 10-place grid penalty.
Sainz originally qualified in P15, but after the various grid penalties were applied, he will line up in P19 for the Belgian Grand Prix today.
Multiple power unit components changes at the Belgian Grand Prix
Kimi Antonelli and
Max Verstappen, who will start from the front row of the grid, were among the drivers fitted with new engine components for this weekend. However, they escape a penalty for now, as they have not exceeded the number of those components permitted over the course of the season.
Ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, McLaren had already confirmed that Norris will start the weekend with a 10-place grid penalty. After qualifying third, this means he will start Sunday's race from P13.
"We have chosen to do this in Belgium, a circuit where overtaking is relatively more prevalent, as opposed to the following two events in Hungary and Zandvoort. We now plan to use this fourth power electronics unit for the remainder of the season, in order to maximise reliability while minimising sporting penalties on Lando," the Woking-based outfit explained.
Red Bull's Isack Hadjar will also start from the back of the grid. The Frenchman confirmed the news during Thursday's media day at Spa after receiving the same new power unit components as Verstappen. Hadjar, as a result, played a key role in giving Verstappen a tow during qualifying and was widely praised for his execution.
The two Aston Martin drivers, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, were also hit with grid penalties.
