After the chequered flag, it seemed Lando Norris will have a 42-point lead over Verstappen heading into the final two rounds, but that advantage has taken a dramatic hit. Under Article 3.5.9 of the technical regulations, the plank must maintain a minimum thickness of 9 mm. Both MCL39s failed this check, leaving the stewards no option but to disqualify them.
McLaren fought to defend their drivers, saying multiple appeals, but none were considered strong enough to overturn the disqualification, leaving Verstappen firmly back in the hunt for the championship.
The four-time world champion took the lead after Norris' mistake into Turn 1—a position he would hold from start to finish.
From then on, the Dutchman showed he could control the gap to his rivals behind him, pushing when necessary and managing his advantage flawlessly all the way to the chequered flag.
While the victory alone wouldn’t have been enough to put him back into serious title contention, the disqualification of both McLarens now gives Verstappen renewed hope heading into the final two races, with momentum firmly on his side. He now trails Norris by 24 points.
