From the FIA introducing a wave of changes for the 2027 season to Cadillac aligning with Ferrari’s stance on future power unit regulations, here are the latest developments across Formula 1 in our F1 Today roundup.

FIA confirms major F1 testing changes for 2027

The FIA has approved a series of adjustments to Formula 1’s sporting regulations for 2027, with revisions to winter testing among the key updates as the sport prepares for its next major technical reset. The changes were ratified by the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council and form part of a broader effort to ensure teams are given adequate preparation time ahead of the new regulatory era.
Under the updated plan, teams will benefit from additional opportunities to run and evaluate their cars before the 2027 season begins. While pre-season testing has been increasingly limited in recent years due to cost-control measures, the FIA believes the scale of the upcoming regulation shift justifies a revised approach.
The decision comes as Formula 1 continues to refine its next-generation technical package. Ongoing discussions between the FIA, teams, and power unit manufacturers have already led to agreement on further engine changes for 2027, including a move away from the current 50-50 split between combustion and electric power towards a 60-40 balance. The aim is to reduce heavy energy management and promote closer, more attacking racing.

Cadillac ready to align with Ferrari amid 2027 power unit debate

Cadillac is expected to follow Ferrari’s position if a formal vote is held on proposed changes to the 2027 engine regulations.
There is growing momentum within the paddock for adjustments to the original plan, and if Ferrari backs the proposal, reportedly supported by Mercedes, Red Bull-Ford, and Honda, Cadillac is likely to vote in favour as well. However, if Ferrari rejects the changes, its future customer team, Cadillac, is also expected to oppose the proposal.
Last month, the FIA and engine manufacturers reached an initial agreement to shift the power split from the current 50/50 combustion-electric balance to 60/40 starting in 2027. The change is designed to improve racing by reducing the need for drivers to constantly manage battery deployment and lift-and-coast strategies.

However, Ferrari and Audi have since raised concerns, reportedly preferring to delay the implementation of the revised split until 2028 to allow additional preparation time. Meanwhile, the positions of Honda and Cadillac, both future engine stakeholders with voting influence, remain key factors in the ongoing discussion.
