Aston Martin has announced a change to its ownership structure, with American billionaire Robert Wood Johnson acquiring a minority stake in the Formula 1 team. The former United States ambassador to the United Kingdom, is also the owner of the New York Jets and a shareholder at Premier League side Crystal Palace. Johnson, commonly known as Woody Johnson, has acquired what Aston Martin describes as a "strategic minority stake". The exact size of the shareholding and the financial terms of the investment have not been disclosed.
The 79-year-old will join Aston Martin's board of directors as vice-chairman with immediate effect. However, his arrival will not change the day-to-day leadership of the Formula 1 team, with Lawrence Stroll remaining executive chairman and controlling shareholder.
Stroll said in a statement: "I am extremely happy to welcome Woody to the Aston Martin family. His experience, passion and investment further strengthen our position as we enter the next phase of our competitive journey.
"His deep appreciation for our brand, combined with his commitment to innovation and commercial opportunity, makes him an ideal partner as we look to the future.”
Why Johnson has invested in Aston Martin
Johnson is a major figure in American sport and business. He is an heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune and has owned NFL franchise the New York Jets since 2000. He also has an interest in English football after acquiring a 43 per cent stake in Premier League club Crystal Palace in 2025.
The American also has strong ties to the United Kingdom. Johnson served as US ambassador to the UK between 2017 and 2021 after being appointed by President Donald Trump.
Johnson said in a statement on Aston Martin's website: "During my time as US Ambassador to the United Kingdom, I have developed a deep appreciation for Aston Martin's rich history, as well as Lawrence Stroll’s strategic vision and entrepreneurial spirit.
"I am excited to partner with him and contribute to the continued development of the Team, with the ambition of building an organisation capable of competing at the very highest level of the sport. We also share a commitment to growing the fanbase in the United States and introducing even more fans to the excitement of Formula One."
The news comes at a time when star driver Fernando Alonso is
yet to decide on his F1 future. Chief Trackside Officer Mike Krack said on Thursday: "
Yeah, I mean the discussion has been going on for many, many months already. I think Fernando was always saying that he will take a decision around the summer time. And I think we will see a decision in the coming weeks."
