Fernando Alonso has once again addressed his future, admitting that he has yet to decide whether he will continue racing next season. The two-time world champion recently turned 45 and may not yet be ready to call time on his legendary and remarkably long career, despite Aston Martin's lack of performance this season.
However, the final race before the summer break in Hungary offered a glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel, with the heavily upgraded AMR26 finally moving away from the back of the field and returning to the midfield battle, close to the points-paying positions.
Alonso offers fresh update on decision over 2027 F1 season
Speaking to
GPblog, among other media, at Zandvoort,
Alonso pointed out that the regulations will remain largely unchanged next season, aside from a small adjustment to the balance of power involving the combustion engine. The Spaniard therefore suggested that the decision over whether to continue racing will ultimately depend on how much he is enjoying himself.
"The regulations will stay. We know the regulations, we know that next year is going to be the same. A small tweak on the power between the combustion increased a little bit, but the regulations stay the same, so it's up to me if I want to have more or less fun."
Asked whether he has a timeline in mind for making his decision, the Spaniard added: "I don't know. I just came from holiday now, so I will see in the next days or weeks or months. Let's see. I know Lawrence is coming this weekend, so I will have a nice lunch with him or coffee, and maybe Monza. I don't know when he's coming next. I will have to go to the factory soon as well to do Madrid simulators, so maybe if Lawrence is around or Adrian, I will sit also with them. So maybe in the next weeks."

He later added that
Formula 1 has always been and will remain a fundamental part of his life, while confirming his intention to stay with Aston Martin for the long term, whether as a driver or in another role.
Alonso explained that his future behind the wheel will ultimately be discussed with Lawrence Stroll and Adrian Newey, stressing that he would be happy to continue racing if that is what the team needs, but would equally consider taking on a different position if he could provide greater value elsewhere.
"F1 is, it has been, and it will be always my life, and my heart is here. I will be with in this team in one role or in another for the long term. So it's not about myself or about who is driving next year or if I'm driving next year or three more years. I don't know. It's (about) sitting with Lawrence and with Adrian, and if needs for the team is for me to drive, I will consider, I will be happy. If I can be more valuable in another position, I will consider and I will be happy as well."
Alonso admits he still needs the adrenaline of racing
Finally, Alonso stressed that he still needs to race and experience the adrenaline of competition, with several challenges remaining on his radar, including winning the Dakar Rally, another attempt at the Indy 500 and, above all, securing a third
F1 title. However, the Spaniard admitted that he does not know whether Aston Martin can reach the level required to fight for the title while he is still behind the wheel, acknowledging that the process could take a long time.
"I need to drive something. That's something for sure. I need to race, I need to feel the adrenaline. I'm a competitor and I have other challenges in my head, as I said many times, to win one day Dakar or to try again Indy 500 or whatever is coming next. And also, winning in Formula 1 a third world championship, that will be obviously the ultimate dream."
"Is that possible? I don't know how long it will take to achieve that performance for this team. It's going to be a very long time, maybe I'm not behind the wheel, but that's something that is all in my head."
