During the media event organised ahead of the Zandvoort weekend to discuss his Red Bull contract extension, Max Verstappen admitted that he had given more thought to retirement than to switching teams. The Dutchman has brought one of the most persistent transfer sagas in recent
Formula 1 history to an end, reaffirming his commitment to Red Bull for another two years and extending his contract until 2030, compared to its previous 2028 expiry date.
Speaking to GPblog, among other media, Verstappen revealed that he was closer to considering retirement than a move to another team. After the opening races of the season, he even told Laurent Mekies not to approach him with questions about his future because he was unsure whether he wanted to continue in Formula 1, although discussions between the two always remained open.
"I think I was closer to retiring than changing team. I have to say, after the first few races, I said to Laurent, 'Don't come to me with any kind of questions about the future, because I don't even know if I want to stay.' But honestly, we always kept it very open."

Verstappen went on to stress that his passion for racing remains strong, while revealing that he has held several positive discussions with both Formula 1 and the FIA as they gradually work towards improving the sport. The Dutchman has also adapted to and accepted the current situation, while his new contract could potentially give him the opportunity to reassess his future if V8 engines are introduced.
"I love racing, and I think I had a lot of very good discussions with F1, but also with the FIA, and I think we are, let's say, slowly working towards something that becomes better and better. So also from my side, of course, I adapted, I accepted the situation that I think we're all in, and just trying to make the best of that. I think also with the year that I signed to, it again opens up the door maybe, you know, when potentially the V8s come in, to look at that again as well." Bortoleto thrilled by Verstappen's Red Bull renewal: 'It's incredible'
The Audi driver was delighted to learn that his friend has extended his Red Bull contract, keeping the four-time world champion with the Austrian team until 2030.
Speaking to GPblog, among other media, ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix weekend, Bortoleto expressed his happiness at seeing Verstappen put an end to the speculation surrounding his future. The Brazilian also believes the decision is positive for Formula 1 as a whole, arguing that having a four-time world champion on the grid provides entertainment, exciting racing and enjoyment for the fans.
Bortoleto also revealed that he has not yet had the opportunity to congratulate Verstappen personally. He only learned about the contract extension while travelling to the media event, but intends to speak to the Dutchman when he sees him during the Zandvoort weekend.
