Fernando Alonso was decidedly unhappy with the Aston Martin strategy team after the British Grand Prix.
According to the Spaniard, it was mainly his side of the garage that always got it wrong. Fernando Alonso had qualified in an impressive ninth place
for the British Grand Prix. A good position to strike in the rain, but it was instead teammate
Lance Stroll who benefitted from P18.
After the race, Alonso spoke to the media, frustrated.
‘’I mean, it seems that P3 was very possible. I started P7, finished P9. Nico started P18, finished P3. So I think if you get it right, we know in these mixed conditions how good the result could be.''
''It seems that we are not nailing the strategy always on these conditions, especially on my side of the garage. For whatever reason we are always a little bit slow to react’’, said Alonso to GPblog.
Could Alonso have finished on the podium?
Asked to what extent this was a team decision
or a collaboration between the driver and the team, Alonso made it clear that there was
little he could do himself. ‘’I have the experience but I don't have the data. Unless I have everything on the cockpit and I can see the radar, I can see the tyre temperature, I can see the graining, I can see the lap time of the others, I can see many other factors that they are aware of.’’
‘’When they call me to pit, I pit. I can feedback the track conditions but I cannot do much more than that. Whoever says that the driver makes these conditions and win the races, it's bullshit. This is just a data driven race, with with all the parameters we have in the car.’’
Lance Stroll was briefly in third place, but complained after
the race about the wear on his tyres. Confronted with this, Alonso said: ‘’I would like to have his track position to be honest and try to feel the deg from that because I was P14 when everyone switches to dry.’’
