Fernando Alonso has yet to think about his future in Formula 1. The most experienced driver on the current grid explained a timeline for when he will make a decision about continuing in the series. "I haven't started to think about it," Alonso began to GPblog among others when asked about his future in Miami. "I have conversations with Lawrence [Stroll] and the team regularly. We met in Monaco this last weekend as well and we had a nice dinner together, but we never discussed deeply the future. We are aligned on everything, we are a team, but we are talking more about the present, to be honest, than the future. I know that at one point this year, around summertime or right after summer, I need to make a decision. I'm yet to sit down and think about it."
Leaving F1 doesn't mean Alonso will retire completely
The Spaniard has competed in various racing series in the past. He won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and has also raced at the Indy 500 and the Dakar Rally. Racing in other series remains a possibility for the two-time world champion.
Alonso continued:
"I haven’t thought about deeply and I need to speak with my family as well, I need to speak with my people first and decide what to do next year. I'm very relaxed about it, if I continue racing [in F1], I think, it will be a better season than this one with the project in year two.
"If I stop racing, I know that I will race in another series, as I said many times, Dakar will be a possibility, if one day I can win in endurance racing, Formula 1, and rally that will be probably unprecedented, and then that's something that is very appealing. I drove the Prototype, the Valkyrie, two weeks ago, and that was a nice feeling as well. So maybe Le Mans one day again… So I'm not too worried when I stop Formula 1, I will keep racing somehow and I will still be linked with the team in a different role for sure in the future. So, either way, I'm relaxed and I will be active when I stop Formula 1," the
Aston Martin driver concluded.
