Formula 1 announced Friday that the Nürburgring will return to the F1 calendar this season. It fills the gap left by Hockenheim. That circuit announced that a race without an audience is not profitable for them. The Nürburgring hopes to alternate the German Grand Prix with Hockenheim in the future.

"It would be best for us to go back to a solution where we alternate. I think that will help both of us. But we are now focusing on the coming year and we'll see what happens next," said track director Mirco Markfort to Motorsport-Magazin.com.

Popularity of F1 in Germany waning

Between 2007 and 2013 this construction was used and it kept the German GP alive at the time. According to Markfort it is in any case a good thing that a Grand Prix is planned on German territory. It looked very much like this wouldn't happen this season and the future remains uncertain.

The reality is that the popularity of Formula 1 in Germany has been declining since Michael Schumacher's departure. Even Sebastian Vettel could not change this in his successful period. RTL Germany, which entered Formula 1 at the same time as Schumacher, announced earlier this month that they will say goodbye to F1 after this season.
