To ensure safety in Formula 1 on the track, the FIA is introducing stricter speed restrictions. This is done under a safety car or virtual safety car in parts of the track where double yellow flags are displayed. This measure is taken after investigation and evaluation of previous incidents and consultation with Formula 1 teams and drivers.

In the past, yellow flags meant that drivers had to reduce their speed significantly, and that not overtaking and being prepared to change direction or stop was the norm. Now things are a little different. Earlier, no specific times were attached to them. That will be the case this coming weekend.

"What we want to do is to provide drivers with a tool to help them during incidents and to make races even safer," said technical director Tim Goss in a statement from the FIA. Goss is taking charge of this project.

What does this look like in practice?

Drivers must now maintain a fixed speed limit during the Monaco Grand Prix in areas where double yellow flags are displayed.

"So, when there is a physical or virtual safety car, the drivers are informed of that delta time on their dashboard display and by radio tones and they have to maintain a positive value," Goss says.
