The FIM have decided to officially half the number of points given out at the conclusion of the Thai Grand Prix race in Buriram due to an insufficient number of laps being completed.
The race saw a multitude of incidents and riders being stetchered off the track, including championship hopeful David Alonso, who was knocked unconscious after a brutal crash with Senna Agius and Filip Salac.
There was later another red flag after a collision between Luca Lunetta and Sergio Garcia left both riders struggling to get back on their feet.
Manuel Gonzales, who narrowly missed out on the 2025 championship to now-promoted Diogo Moreria, managed to remain cool throughout the restarts and took a convincing victory in the openign round ahead of Izan Guevarra and Ivan Ortola.
While the decision won't have an immediate impact on the order of the championship standings, it could come back to alter the course of the championship further down the line.
The statement from the FIM reads as follows:
"Following a review of the Moto2 race results from Thailand, an error has been identified in the total race distance completed. The results were initially issued with full championship points.
Under normal circumstances, race control software issues a prompt indicating that 50% of original race distance has not been completed in order to award half points.Due to the multiple starts that took place at the Grand Prix of Thailand, the single lap completed on the second start, which should have been null and void, was incorrectly added to the overall race distance.
In accordance with the sporting regulations, the race distance actually completed requires half points to be awarded. The points allocation has therefore been corrected and updated championship standings will be published."
