Moto2

Although Moto2 has only officially been around since 2010, its class of motorcycle has been around for quite while longer. Far from being a mere feeder series into MotoGP, Moto2 is the pinnacle of motorcycle racing below 1000cc and is a prestigious title in its own right. However, it is certainly a useful way to get into MotoGP as demonstrated by the likes of Tony Elias, Marc Marquez and Johann Zarco, who all won the category.
Originally brought in to replace the 250cc category, Moto2 started out with 600cc engines before later adopting 765cc three-cylinder units in 2019.

Famous Moto2 Champions

Many of the most recognisable names in the sport have worked their way through the Moto2 ranks. Moto2 champions on the current grid include Marc Marquez (2012), Francesco Bagnaia (2018), Alex Marquez (2019) and Pedro Acosta (2023).
Historically, winners of the 250cc class before its evolution include the likes of Valentino Rossi, Max Biaggi, Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo.

Do Moto2 Titles Count As World Championships?

Competition in Moto3 and Moto2 is significantly tougher than in other comparative motorsports. While the title might not have as much prestige today as it used to in the past, many still consider titles in these “lower” classes to count as World Championships. However, as of 2025, Liberty Media is making an attempt to further distinguish MotoGP as the ultimate class by only recognising MotoGP titles as official World Championships. Most people simply refer to MotoGP as the “premier class” while still giving lots of respect to the champions of the Moto3 and Moto2 categories.
