British media blown away by Lando Norris' dominant Hungarian GP victory

Despite McLaren's struggles to match the consistency of rivals Ferrari and Mercedes so far this season, as they get their heads around the complexities of the 2026 regulations, world champion Norris' ability has rarely been in question - with the 26-year-old himself believing he is in better form this year than during his 2025 title winning campaign.

Securing McLaren's third win in three years at the Hungaroring, Norris' chances of a title defence are admittedly slim - 91 points separating the Briton and leader Kimi Antonelli - but cannot be ruled out entirely, especially given McLaren's recent history of introducing critical upgrades mid-season.

Some within the British media are not ruling out a late Norris charge to defend his 2025 title, here's how they reacted to his supreme victory at the Hungarian GP.

In their coverage of the Hungarian GP, The Telegraph said Norris' win is a "reminder" to the rest of the F1 grid of just how good he can be, having had to sit on the sidelines while fellow Britons Russell and Lewis Hamilton battle Antonelli for the championship.

The Telegraph wrote: "For most of the season, Lando Norris has barely been an afterthought in the championship fight. Nearly eight months on from winning his maiden title, he has had to contend with a largely uncompetitive and occasionally unreliable McLaren car.

British publication BBC Sport similarly observe that once McLaren gave Norris the tools to compete at the very front, the world champion showed the rest of the grid exactly what he is made of, praising the Briton and McLaren for an "almost perfect" Grand Prix.

The British outlet said: "It was a drive that had been a long time coming, after a difficult start to the season for the reigning world champion and his McLaren team. But when McLaren finally gave him a car of the performance level he had become used to in the past season and a half, he more than made the most of it.

In their review of the action in Budapest, The Guardian lauded Antonelli's impressive comeback from P7 to secure the final podium spot in a case of "damage limitation," while also gushing over Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen's epic battle.

Most of the plaudits, however, rightfully go to Norris, who the Guardian believe is still within a shot at the title with McLaren. "Yet the afternoon had really belonged to Norris and there was a palpable sense of relief and pleasure that he finally had the monkey off his back this season and that McLaren might yet, whisper it, be players in this title fight.
