George Russell received a reduced five-second penalty during the United States Grand Prix after the FIA stewards identified two mitigating circumstances in his incident with Oscar Piastri. Despite enduring a difficult afternoon compared to Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, the Briton managed to secure the final position needed to prevent the Italian from celebrating his maiden Formula 1 world title in Austin.
FIA reveals why Russell escaped heavier penalty
Russell's race was complicated by an opening-lap incident at Turn 12, where he ran off the circuit while defending against Piastri. The Mercedes driver subsequently rejoined ahead of the Australian and retained his position approaching Turn 13, prompting an investigation into whether he gained an advantage by leaving the track.
The FIA stewards explained that Russell's actions would ordinarily warrant a ten-second penalty, having concluded that he gained a lasting advantage by leaving the circuit at Turn 12 and rejoining ahead of Piastri.
However, the circumstances leading up to the incident played a significant role in their decision. Russell was challenging Isack Hadjar ahead of him, allowing Piastri to close in and put the Mercedes driver under pressure. The stewards considered this sequence of events when assessing the infringement, alongside the fact that it took place on the opening lap.

After reviewing the available footage, positioning data and evidence submitted by both teams, the officials decided that a five-second penalty was sufficient, reducing the standard sanction by half.

Russell struggles as Antonelli dominates in Austin
Russell's afternoon contrasted sharply with that of his Mercedes teammate, who converted pole position into his ninth victory of the season. While Antonelli controlled proceedings at the front, the Briton struggled to make progress after starting sixth, eventually crossing the line in eighth place.
His disappointing result nevertheless carried significant implications for the championship battle. Antonelli arrived in Austin with an opportunity to secure the title, but needed Russell to finish ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton to finish outside the top four.

Russell ultimately claimed four points for eighth place, finishing one position higher than the threshold Antonelli required. With Hamilton also taking fourth, the Italian's victory was not enough to settle the championship, postponing his first opportunity to celebrate becoming Formula 1 world champion.
