George Russell has been handed a five-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage during the United States Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver ran wide at Turn 12 while attempting to overtake Isack Hadjar, prompting an investigation by the FIA stewards.
The incident occurred at the end of Austin's long back straight, where Russell went over the outside kerb while battling the Red Bull driver. As he returned to the circuit, he also made wheel-to-wheel contact with Oscar Piastri, who was alongside him on the left.
After reviewing the incident, the stewards concluded that Russell gained an advantage by leaving the track and imposed a five-second penalty on the Briton.
