Norris targets more victories after supreme Hungarian GP win: 'I knew it was coming'

Norris had lined up on Pole Position after beating Lewis Hamilton by 0.012s on Saturday, but lost his lead to his Aussie teammate on the first lap. Opting to stay out after Piastri pitted halfway through the race, Norris lapped well and was rewarded with the net lead following contact between his teammate and back-marker Carlos Sainz - there was no catching the world champion from then.

Speaking immediately after the race, Norris reflected on his disappointing start, which saw Piastri pass him at Turn 2. He said: "I don’t know what happened, to be honest. I just kept losing the rear, I had like three or four big snaps. It felt horrible. Oscar did a good job to get the cut back and get back past. I think I was just a bit wide in the dirt, and game over for the first lap.

Norris nonetheless demonstrated fantastic pace behind his teammate, even if he struggled for grip at times within a second of Piastri for long periods of the race.

Norris continued: "But I was pushing like hell to try to force him into a mistake or something. My pace today was probably some of the best pace I’ve ever had. The car was beautiful to drive and I felt very confident, so a great race.

After bringing a significant upgrade package to Hungary, there will be hopes McLaren can continue their form into the second half of the season, with F1 returning at Zandvoort in late August.

“I want to believe so," Norris said. "Considering how good it felt today, I certainly want to believe that we can continue it. There’s going to be moments where we’re going to struggle more and moments that might be even better.
