In each of the last seven races the polesitter has gone on to win the race. This almost fifty-year record can now be broken in Las Vegas.
Between the Dutch GP and the Brazil GP, the polesitter has gone on to win Sunday’s race on each occasion - a total of seven times.
This contrasts with a sequence of six races between last year’s Canadian GP and Belgian GP where the driver who started on pole failed to win each time.
But as
F1 heads to Las Vegas, the all-time record of eight consecutive victories from pole position can be equalled if pole position is successfully converted.
A fifty-year record
The record of eight wins was remarkably set almost fifty years ago in 1976, an era when reliability was much weaker and therefore race results were by and large much more unpredictable.
Between the United States Grand Prix West around Long Beach in March and the fateful Nurburgring race that saw Niki Laudi suffer his horrific fiery crash, the driver who started on pole won the race each time.
This period of races in 1976 saw iconic drivers like James Hunt, Niki Laudi, Jody Scheckter and Clay Regazzoni all go from pole position to the top step of the podium.
The current run stretches from Oscar Piastri’s victory at the Dutch GP in August all the way to Lando Norris’ triumph last time out in Brazil.

Max Verstappen and George Russell have also achieved lights to flag victories in this time.
The current run of races is the longest streak since the seven races between the United States GP at Austin in 2019 and the British GP in 2020.
Due to the delay in starting the 2020 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this streak lasted a remarkable nine months.
This equals two previous seven-race runs. The first was between the Japanese GP in 1991 and the San Marino GP in 1992, the second occasion was between the Belgian GP in 2000 and the Malaysian GP in 2001.
But in Las Vegas the record of eight can be matched if the driver who starts the race in P1 can claim the chequered flag after 50 laps around the City of Lights.
Norris set to break long standing McLaren record
From 1996 to 2004 David Coulthard made 150 starts for the Woking-based outfit, the most of any McLaren driver in the team's history. Norris is set to equal the Scot's record at the
Las Vegas Grand Prix. Read the full story here.
