Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are almost certain to be disqualified after the Las Vegas Grand Prix. The reason they’ve been summoned to the stewards always results in a DQ for the competitor. In the recent past, there have been multiple examples of drivers being disqualified after the plank or skid block under the car was found to be too thin at the end of the race. Here are a number of examples:
| 2025 | Chinese GP | Lewis Hamilton | Plank too thin |
| 2025 | Chinese GP | Charles Leclerc | Plank too thin |
| 2025 | Bahrain GP | Nico Hülkenberg | Plank too thin |
| 2023 | United States GP | Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc | Plank too thin |
In all cases where a driver and team had to report to the stewards, a disqualification actually followed. It therefore seems likely that Norris and Piastri will not escape this penalty either.
The disqualification follows an
investigation by the FIA in the McLaren garage. After the race,
FIA technical chief Joe Bauer lingered at
McLaren for longer than usual, quickly drawing attention.
Disqualification for Norris has extreme consequences for the title fight
Not long after, it emerged that McLaren must report to the stewards because both cars allegedly had a plank that was too thin after the Grand Prix. Usually, such an offense leads to a disqualification.
A disqualification would have major consequences for the world title fight. Where Max Verstappen seemed all but out of contention, a 25-point swing would mean he is only 24 points behind Norris and would even be level with Oscar Piastri.
