It turned out to be another weekend to quickly forget: despite his impressive pole position, Max Verstappen played a minor role at the British Grand Prix. Mercedes fared even worse, but still, Verstappen considers the German team as a possible improvement over Red Bull for '26. What's the reason behind this?
Toto Wolff could not hide his disappointment when George Russell spun off the track in tricky conditions at Silverstone with his Mercedes. A strong result faded away, as it was evident from the team boss's reaction. Ultimately, Russell ended up in tenth place, while Andrea Kimi Antonelli had to retire his car.

Mercedes has work to do

A tough day for Mercedes then, and there have been several of those over the season. Yet, this is the team that seems to be the most logical destination for Max Verstappen should he decide to leave Red Bull Racing. Looking solely at the results, that might not seem like a significant improvement for the Dutchman.

However, GPblog has learned that it is indeed seen that way. Of course, Mercedes must make the necessary step forward performance-wise. Verstappen sees that too. It is said, however, that the advantage the German team has lies in potentially having the best power unit in 2026.

This is a crucial argument for Verstappen

But another, very important argument to possibly leave Red Bull and choose Mercedes is in a different area. Verstappen also notices how calm Mercedes is internally, with clear structures and everyone moving in the same direction - unlike at Red Bull. There, the leadership of the team fights among themselves, something that affects the entire organization.
The coming weeks will definitely reveal what Verstappen decides to do: does the reigning world champion stay with Red Bull or choose Mercedes? If it's the latter option, then the calmness at the German outfit will surely be embraced.
