Max Verstappen explained that his power unit 'just dropped dead' after his horrific start at the Monaco Grand Prix.
The Dutchman’s day in Monte Carlo was already over before it had even begun. Starting from P2, the RB22 limped off the line when the lights went out, and after completing just a single lap, Verstappen was forced to retire from the race. Fortunately, no one hit the Red Bull Racing car from behind.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the race, he explained: "Already the formation lap was not going very well and then, after that, the pre-start was terrible, there was no consistency, and then the engine just dropped dead.
"I only got a little bit of power back after the first corner and then the engine sounded really awful. I could not go full throttle so we brought it back [to the pits] and that was it," he concluded.
Kimi Antonelli currently leads the Monaco Grand Prix ahead of the two Ferrari drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Follow the session with GPblog's liveblog here!
