Mercedes performed excellently at the Canadian Grand Prix with a P3 and P4 for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Still, Toto Wolff is cautious with hopeful statements. The team boss knows that a lot has to change to be at the top.
"One swallow doesn’t make a summer. We saw that swallow in Barcelona but somehow it flew somewhere else. So, I think we need to be careful. We were off the pace on Friday, in the wet we were good yesterday, I think it was respectable", Wolff is quoted by F1.com.
In Spain, the team performed strongly, but in Monaco, Mercedes seemed to have taken a step back again. At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Hamilton and Russell benefited from Ferrari's drop-outs, but in Canada, the pace seemed to have picked up again.

Wolff tempers expectations

Wolff even believes Mercedes were among the fastest cars on Sunday. Yet the Austrian knows there is much work to be done to challenge Red Bull Racing and Ferrari. The next race on the programme is the British Grand Prix, an important race for Mercedes with home heroes Russell and Hamilton.

"Silverstone was good to us in the past and the circuit is smoother than the last three ones, but it’s not Barcelona, so now we should manage our own expectations and really grind away, look at the data and come up with some sensible solutions, not just for Silverstone but going forward.”
