It’s now been 24 hours since Mercedes achieved their first 1-2 of the season in Spain. We take a look at how the teams and drivers will be feeling and how they can move on towards the famous Monaco Grand Prix in two weeks time.

Who slept well?

Mercedes
A top two finish really takes the pressure off every Mercedes member. Perhaps the first comfortable nights sleep the whole team have experienced since winter testing! Whilst you can’t write Ferrari off after just one dip in performance, Mercedes have their tails up once more and have added confidence in the car.
Max Verstappen
He took his first steps on the podium since his race win in Japan. It’s been a bumpy (quite literally) start for the Dutchman, with plenty of fans and pundits from around the world jumping on his back. Although his race wasn’t completed without drama and a fully connected front wing, he’d have woken up with a spring back in his step.
Kevin Magnussen
Out of 5 races in 2018, he’s had two top 6 finishes. And not only this, the 8 points he collected in Spain, creates a huge gap between himself and Grosjean. He’s in the top 10 and in touching distance of being the ‘best of the rest’ driver. He’s doing himself many favours for the future, demonstrating exactly what the 25-year-old can do.

So who slept badly?

Romain Grosjean
Once again, another major mistake, which this time not only caused himself to retire but 2 other drivers. The incident could have been much worse, there was a high chance of collecting others on the way through. There’s debate about what exactly caused the issue, but he’ll be regretting keeping his foot pinned on the throttle. He probably fell asleep whilst replaying this crash in his mind!!
Ferrari
They were flying! Impressing every F1 fan outside of the Mercedes supporter base. But they let it slip this weekend. And they’ll be very disappointed in themselves. The gap has opened up to 27 points, mainly as a result of Kimi Raikkonen’s DNF. The turbo issue experienced by Kimi will bring about extra concern for the Italians making for a rough night!
Stoffel Vandoorne
He’s not only getting outscored by his team-mate, but by some distance. Another DNF wasn’t part of the plan for McLaren on a weekend they expected to be much stronger on. His season doesn’t get any better and his confidence won’t be much higher than it was last season!
