Max Verstappen appeared far from satisfied with the behaviour of his RB22 during FP2 for the Spanish Grand Prix, quickly making his frustrations known to race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase over the team radio.
After finishing fourth in the morning session, the four-time world champion ended Friday with the sixth-fastest time, almost nine tenths adrift of pace-setter Norris. The McLaren driver led a tightly packed top three, with Russell and teammate Piastri separated by only a few hundredths of a second behind him.
Opening up over team radio, Verstappen voiced his frustration with the RB22's handling, at one stage asking whether he could abandon the current tyre run and switch compounds instead, describing the car's behaviour as "just horrendous."
Red Bull headed to Barcelona with only minor refinements rather than a major upgrade package. According to the FIA submission, the team introduced two small front-wing updates aimed at optimising load distribution and expanding the available setup window.
The first modification focuses on the geometry of the wing elements where they meet the endplate, with the objective of improving local load generation while maintaining airflow stability. The second update consists of an increase in flap camber, providing the team with an alternative specification capable of generating additional front-end load if required by the track conditions or setup demands.

Mercedes-powered cars dominate as Norris edges Russell in Spanish GP FP2

The second practice session in Barcelona delivered an extremely close battle at the front, with McLaren and Mercedes emerging as the standout performers. While Piastri set the early benchmark on the medium tyres, Russell and Norris gradually raised the pace as the track evolved. The battle for top spot intensified once the soft-tyre runs began, with Leclerc briefly putting Ferrari into contention before Russell moved clear with a strong lap. McLaren quickly hit back, however, as first Piastri and then Norris edged their way to the top of the order, the Briton eventually ending the session just nine thousandths ahead of Russell.
The session was not without its incidents. Liam Lawson's running came to an abrupt halt after a technical failure on the main straight forced him to stop his Racing Bulls car and retire early from the session. The interruption only resulted in a short Virtual Safety Car period, allowing teams to resume their programmes with minimal disruption. Elsewhere, Bottas also encountered reliability problems, remaining stuck in the garage for much of the session due to an ECU-related issue.
As attention shifted towards long-run performance in the closing stages, the picture remained highly encouraging for both McLaren and Mercedes. The two teams displayed very similar race pace, consistently lapping in the low 1:21s while managing tyre degradation effectively. Ferrari also appeared competitive over longer stints, with Leclerc regularly dipping into the high 1:20s.
