Lando Norris set the quickest time of FP2 ahead of this weekend's Barcelona Grand Prix, showing signs that it could be a battle between McLaren and Mercedes for the victory.
The Brit edged out
George Russell to top spot by just 0.009 seconds, with
Oscar Piastri rounding out the top three. Championship leader
Kimi Antonelli, in his first session of the weekend after sitting out FP1, was some six tenths off the top in fifth, behind the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc. The Italian was not happy at the end of the session as he felt he was blocked by Piastri and appeared to give the Australian a little squeeze before going into a corner later in the lap.
In total, seven drivers returned to the track after giving up their car for rookie drivers in the first session this morning. Lewis Hamilton, who was among those drivers to miss the first session, struggled in FP2, finishing ninth and over eighth tenths of a second behind his teammate Leclerc.
Max Verstappen struggled for grip and finished sixth, ahead of Arvid Lindblad's Racing Bull, Gabriel Bortoleto in the Audi, Hamilton and Isack Hadjar's Red Bull.
There were problems for Liam Lawson and Valterri Bottas. Lawson's Racing Bulls came to a stop just after coming out of the pit lane, though unlike Bottas he was able to put a time on the board. The Finnish Cadillac driver had an ECU issue which prevented him from running.
There was almost a collision at the end of the session when Sergio Perez turned in on the Red Bull of Hadjar, with the Frenchman having to back out just as he tried to pass the Cadillac driver.
The pace of the McLarens in FP2 offer promise for a strong fight against Mercedes this weekend, after
Russell finished top of FP1.
