Verstappen’s frustration boiled over during the Japanese Grand Prix, laid bare in a tense radio exchange with Gianpiero Lambiase
The four-time world champion endured another difficult Sunday at Suzuka, recovering to eight after being knocked out in Q2 during qualifying.
The Dutchman spent much of the race stuck behind Pierre Gasly’s Alpine, which, despite being slower than the RB22, was able to hold position thanks to the superior power of the Mercedes engine.
Right in the thick of his pursuit of the Frenchman, the Dutchman and his race engineer exchanged a few words, with Verstappen taking a little swipe at GP. Here's the exchange in full below.
GP: “Laps are quicker than Piastri, Hamilton, Leclerc and Russell's laps.”

Max: “Yeah, the Alpine is fast as well.”
GP: “I think you’ve got two or three tenths on him, but I appreciate it’s difficult to overtake.”
Max: “Easy to say, mate, when you’re on the pit wall.”

Verstappen to decide his future in the coming weeks

After qualifying on Saturday, Verstappen admitted he had a lot on his mind, and when pressed on what he meant, he opened the door to questions about his future, even hinting at a possible retirement. Speaking after the race, he stressed that his focus is now on what lies ahead, explaining that he plans to use the coming weeks and months to reflect and decide what he really wants going forward.

The tone of his comments did little to ease concerns, with his outlook suggesting a level of uncertainty. Verstappen made it clear that Formula 1 is not everything, pointing out that there is more to life and other paths he could pursue beyond the sport.
Among those, he revealed his intention to take part in the qualifying races for the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring, underlining his growing interest in racing outside F1. Away from the track, he also has lighter plans, including an evening at the theatre with Viaplay, joking that it might not be his strongest suit but something he is willing to try nonetheless.
